Gifts

It is nearly impossible to live through the Christmas season and not think about gifts. Our American culture is inundated with gift options and the pressure that coincides with purchasing and giving them. Gifts come in many different modes, methods, and moments. Some we like, dislike, want, and need. Some are surprises we cherish. Some are surprises we return, stow away, or pass along. Nevertheless, gifts are given and received in abundance.

Material items easily dominate the mindset when discussing or thinking about gifts. We often fail to realize that some of the greatest gifts we have are the people in our lives. The definition of a gift is “something given voluntarily without payment in return, as to show favor toward someone, honor an occasion, or make a gesture of assistance.” A gift fulfills its purpose when it is received. It's imperative we understand the value of the gifts we have in those who surround us every day. Life is at its fullest for us when we have connections of relationships.

The greatest gift ever given to this world was in the person of Jesus. God’s desire to restore relationship with humanity was accomplished through the gift of salvation from sin by believing that Jesus is that gift - the only gift available for that hope. We just have to be willing to receive.

For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that one may boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

We have nothing to offer in return, only our faith. We can never provide payment for His grace and love – His relationship. He is the truest definition of gifts and provides other connections in our lives to help us through life. Receive the gifts. Embrace the gifts, the real gifts, in your life. Christmas will be more enjoyable and less stressful. Merry Christmas.
