THE Gift
Have you ever gone to a birthday party of a relative or friend and expected a gift? That’s ridiculous, right? It just doesn’t happen. It shouldn’t happen. But, I’m afraid it does. Christmas has become a holiday to celebrate everyone else instead of the One the day originated for.
My five year old was pacing the living room floor last night and expressed his anticipation for Christmas morning. He stated that he is ready for the presents. I assume he sensed my assertive look because he immediately turned to me and said, “And I’m glad it’s the birthday of our Lord. I’m gonna give Him money and love.” He gave his priceless grin. Naturally, my raised eyebrows from the previous remark lowered and I couldn’t help but smile. I haven’t decided if that was because he sounded like Nacho Libre or if it was because I knew he was quick enough to win me over. At least he realized it was not all about himself, after he had originally made it all about himself.
Children imitate the actions and process what they learn from adults. How much time do we spend honoring the very reason Christmas exists? I can’t imagine how it would feel for the ones I love the most to spend their time on my birthday expecting and receiving gifts for themselves without even acknowledging me. Yet, I’ve done this too many times on December 25th.
I love the Christmas season and I participate in the festivities, music, parties, gatherings, and yes, the gifts. However, I never want these ideas of the season to overshadow THE gift – Jesus. I want to make sure my son knows the importance of what he said about money and love. I intend to honor Jesus with such gifts. But, I also want to continue what the Magi started (though it was belated) to honor Jesus. They worshipped Him. They knew though their gifts for Him were significant, He was THE gift to all.
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.”
Matthew 2:1-2 (NIV)
What better way to spend the first of Christmas morning than by worshipping Jesus? He never minds giving of Himself for us to enjoy one another and receive gifts. How pleased would He be if all His family acknowledged Him on December 25th and worshipped Him for being THE gift?
